The West Bengal government has removed Dr. Kaustav Nayak and Dr. Debasish Halder from their positions as Director of Medical Education and Director of Health Services, respectively, following a meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and protesting junior doctors. This decision comes after 39 days of protests related to the rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with junior doctors demanding accountability from health officials for alleged corruption. Dr. Swapan Soren and Dr. Suparna Dutta have been appointed as the new in-charge director of health services and officer on special duty of medical education, respectively. Additionally, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has also been transferred, as Banerjee seeks to address the concerns raised by the doctors and encourage them to return to work. The Chief Minister stated that nearly all demands of the junior doctors have been met, urging them to resume their duties for the sake of public welfare.
