Storm-Felled Tree Kills Woman in Wilmington Crash
A 79-year-old woman from Newark, Delaware, was killed and a 79-year-old man was seriously injured when a tree fell onto their Lexus SUV during a severe thunderstorm late Monday night on Lancaster Pike near Hedgerow Place in Wilmington. The male driver attempted to swerve but could not avoid the falling tree, resulting in a fatal collision. The woman, the passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was hospitalized with serious injuries. The storm caused widespread damage, downing trees and power lines and leaving thousands without electricity in the region. The crash led to lengthy travel restrictions, and Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate, asking witnesses to come forward. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
