Cencora Inc., formerly known as AmerisourceBergen, fell victim to a cyberattack resulting in a historic $75 million ransom payment, the largest known in cyber extortion history. The hackers, identified as the Dark Angels group, initially demanded $150 million before negotiations led to a reduced payment in three Bitcoin installments in March 2024. Cencora discovered the breach in February, when sensitive personal data was stolen, and reported $31.4 million in related expenses in their quarterly report. Despite the significant ransom, the company asserts its financial health remains unaffected and has communicated with affected individuals about the breach. Experts warn that such large payouts may encourage further attacks on critical sectors like healthcare, as they are seen as high-value targets. The incident reflects a broader trend of increasing cybercrime within the industry, with ransomware attacks becoming more financially demanding.
