UK GPs to receive £20 bonus for avoiding hospital referrals, aims to cut waiting lists
The UK government is expanding a scheme that pays GPs £20 each time they treat patients in the community rather than referring them to hospitals, aiming to cut NHS waiting lists by up to two million by the end of 2025/26. This 'Advice and Guidance' program encourages GPs to consult with specialists via phone or online and, where appropriate, direct patients to local services or prescribe treatments instead of adding them to hospital waiting lists. The initiative is backed by £80 million in funding and seeks to standardize the approach across England, addressing previous inconsistencies in access. Supporters argue the scheme will deliver care closer to home, save patients time, and reduce NHS pressures, especially for common conditions like menopause symptoms, ear and throat issues, and irritable bowel syndrome. However, critics warn this could lead to delays for those who ultimately need hospital care and add administrative burdens, raising concerns about patient safety and the potential for some to miss necessary treatment. Data indicates that between July and December 2024, about 660,000 treatments were diverted from hospitals to the community, with the hope that increased participation will further reduce waiting lists.
