Marc Staal Retires After 17 NHL Seasons
Veteran defenseman Marc Staal has retired from the NHL after a distinguished 17-year career and has joined the New York Rangers as a Player Development Assistant. Staal, who spent 13 seasons with the Rangers, also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, and Philadelphia Flyers, amassing 53 goals and 234 points in 1,136 regular-season games. Known for his defensive prowess, Staal was an NHL All-Star in 2011 and reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, most recently with the Panthers in 2023. His retirement follows that of his brother Eric, leaving Jordan as the last Staal brother active in the NHL. Staal will now focus on mentoring young players within the Rangers organization, aiming to help the team capture a Stanley Cup.
