The derby, a significant event in Indian football history, was scheduled for August 18 but was abandoned after intelligence warnings indicated potential violence. Chaubey emphasized the cultural importance of the Durand Cup, which is the fourth oldest football tournament globally, and highlighted the numerous appeals he has received from fans requesting the matches to be held in Kolkata. Despite the unrest, the quarterfinals are set to proceed at alternative locations, including Shillong. The situation has sparked protests among sports enthusiasts and former athletes demanding justice for the victim and the reinstatement of the matches in their original venue.
