The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has opened its 29th edition with the historical action thriller 'Uprising,' produced by Netflix, marking the first time a streaming title has kicked off the event. The choice has sparked controversy among critics who argue it undermines the festival's commitment to independent cinema, especially given the current challenges facing the South Korean theatrical market. Despite the backlash, festival programmers defended their decision, noting the film's quality and the need for innovation in programming. The festival is also honoring the late actor Lee Sun-kyun and presenting the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award to Japan's Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Approximately 4,500 guests attended the buoyant opening ceremony, which featured a red-carpet parade led by notable Korean celebrities. Organizers have adapted to past difficulties, presenting more films than last year and aiming for a brighter future for the festival.
