Egypt Inaugurates Abydos Solar PV Plant

Egypt has inaugurated the $500 million Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan, in a significant move to bolster its renewable energy sector. Developed by Dubai-based AMEA Power, the plant has a capacity of 500 megawatts and is expected to generate 1,500 gigawatt-hours annually, powering approximately 300,000 households and offsetting 782,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted this project as a crucial step in reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and addressing the frequent power outages experienced last summer. The project was completed in 18 months, with financial backing from international entities like the International Finance Corporation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. This development is part of a broader strategy to enhance Egypt's energy security and contribute to its green power initiatives, with future plans including a 500-megawatt wind power project in Ras Shukeir. The inauguration was attended by high-profile figures, emphasizing Egypt's commitment to offering investment opportunities in its growing energy sector.
