Ethiopia Plans Nuclear Power Plant with Russia to Boost Regional Energy Leadership

Ethiopia is advancing its ambition to become a regional energy powerhouse through a strategic nuclear cooperation deal with Russia, marked by the signing of an action plan with Rosatom to build the country's first nuclear power plant. This project, utilizing the modern VVER-1200 reactor, complements Ethiopia's existing hydropower capacity from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), aiming to drive industrialization, energy export, and leadership in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos highlighted the significance of the deal for regional energy leadership and economic modernization, while Russia emphasized expanding trade, educational exchanges, and media cooperation with Ethiopia.
