E. coli Outbreak Linked to Twin Sisters Cheese Recall
Twin Sisters Creamery and distributor Peterson Company are voluntarily recalling multiple varieties (Whatcom Blue, Farmhouse, Peppercorn and Mustard Seed) of 2.5‑pound raw, unpasteurized, aged (≥60 days) cheese wheels and pre‑cut half‑moon pieces after testing detected Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC), including E. coli O103. The 2.5‑lb wheels were shipped to distributors in Washington and Oregon between July 27 and Oct. 22, 2025, and some half‑moon pieces were distributed or repackaged for retailers, caterers and food businesses in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Washington between Aug. 14 and Oct. 24, 2025. Washington and Oregon health officials reported three genetically linked E. coli infections that occurred Sept. 5–16 — two Washington residents and one Oregonian, including a child under five and one hospitalization. State and federal laboratories found matching E. coli in opened and unopened cheese samples. Consumers are urged not to eat the recalled products, to return them for a refund or discard them, and to seek medical care if symptomatic because STEC can cause severe illness including bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Investigations are ongoing, Twin Sisters Creamery is cooperating with authorities, and officials noted that aging unpasteurized cheese for 60 days (the legal requirement) did not prevent contamination in this instance.
