Alabama creates shark attack alert system with Lulu's Law
Alabama has enacted new legislation, known as the Lulu Gribbin Shark Alert System Act or Lulu’s Law, establishing a shark attack alert system for beaches in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Inspired by teen shark attack survivor Lulu Gribbin, the system will send mobile alerts to beachgoers and first responders when a shark bite has occurred nearby. The law aims to improve public safety by notifying people of actual shark attacks rather than mere sightings, addressing concerns that frequent alerts about shark presence could cause unnecessary panic and harm tourism. Governor Kay Ivey emphasized the system's role in maintaining safe and enjoyable beaches and signed the bill into law with Gribbin and her family present. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is tasked with creating the rules for the system, which takes effect October 1. Supporters believe this measure will provide reassurance to those visiting Alabama’s Gulf Coast beaches.
