Burkina Faso Junta Dismisses PM Amid Instability

Burkina Faso's military government, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has dismissed Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela and dissolved the entire government, with no reasons provided for the decision. This move follows a pattern of political instability since Traoré seized power in a coup in September 2022, overthrowing the previous military ruler, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. The junta has announced that current government members will continue in their roles until a new cabinet is formed. The political climate remains tense as Burkina Faso faces ongoing security threats from jihadist groups, similar to its Sahel neighbors. This shake-up raises concerns about the military's intentions to maintain power amidst calls for a return to civilian rule. Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, has distanced itself from France and is strengthening ties with Russia and other Sahel nations as part of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
