A recent survey by Netflix and the National Youth Theatre reveals that 89% of working-class parents in the UK discourage their children from pursuing creative careers, favoring traditional professions like law, finance, and medicine due to perceived stability and better pay. The survey, which included 2,000 parents and 500 young people aged 16-25 already in creative roles, found that 73% of these young individuals feel their artistic pursuits are viewed as a waste of education by their families. Additionally, nearly 25% of respondents reported parental unsupportiveness regarding their creative ambitions. This trend highlights ongoing class barriers within the creative industries, where only 8% of workers in film, TV, and radio come from working-class backgrounds. In response to these findings, Netflix and NYT have launched year two of the IGNITE Your Creativity program, designed to provide workshops and networking opportunities for aspiring young creatives. The program aims to bridge the gap between traditional career perceptions and the potential of creative professions, fostering greater representation in the sector.
