Samsung Ordered to Pay $191M for OLED Patent Infringement
A Texas federal jury has ordered Samsung Electronics to pay $191.4 million to Pictiva Displays for willfully infringing two OLED display patents related to pixel-driving circuitry that enhances screen brightness, resolution, and power efficiency. The jury found that Samsung’s products, including its Galaxy smartphones, TVs, laptops, and wearables, used Pictiva’s patented technology without authorization. Samsung denied the claims, arguing the patents were invalid and the technology was already known, but the jury ruled in favor of Pictiva, which is a patent assertion entity that acquires and licenses intellectual property. This verdict adds to Samsung's recent legal setbacks, including a prior patent verdict and a tax penalty in India. Pictiva’s managing director highlighted the verdict as validation of their intellectual property rights, while Samsung has yet to comment but is expected to appeal. The case is likely to proceed to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
