Special Prosecutor Probes Virginia AG Candidate Jay Jones Reckless Driving Community Service
A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones' 2022 reckless driving case and specifically how he completed his court-ordered 1,000 hours of community service. Jones was convicted after being caught driving 116 mph in a 70 mph zone and was sentenced to pay a fine and perform community service. Controversy arose because Jones claimed 500 hours of service with his own political action committee, Meet Our Moment, which was not disclosed in court documents, and another 500 hours with the NAACP. Critics, including Jones' Republican opponent and current Attorney General Jason Miyares, have questioned the validity of the community service hours, noting the improbability of Jones completing them while working full-time and campaigning. Kent County Commonwealth Attorney Scott Renick recused himself due to a conflict of interest, leading to the appointment of Nathan Green as the special prosecutor. The investigation has renewed calls from Miyares for Jones to withdraw from the attorney general race amid the scandal and prior controversial text messages from Jones.
