Over 40,000 Sign Petition Opposing Bayeux Tapestry Loan to Britain
A petition launched by French art historian Didier Rykner has gathered over 40,000 signatures urging President Emmanuel Macron to cancel the planned loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum between 2026 and 2027. Critics, including conservators and experts such as Antoine Verney, chief curator at the Bayeux Museum, argue that the tapestry is too fragile for transport due to its poor condition, which includes thousands of stains, holes, and tears. Despite initial opposition, French authorities have proceeded with plans for the loan, supported by a technical assessment and international committee aiming to ensure safe conservation and display conditions. The controversy has sparked debates about heritage preservation, with opponents calling the loan a potential "crime against heritage" and a publicity stunt risking irreparable damage to the unique 11th-century embroidery. The British Museum has stated its experience in handling such artifacts and cooperation with French colleagues to safeguard the tapestry during its display. The Bayeux Museum is scheduled for renovations starting later this year, which requires the tapestry's temporary relocation, adding complexity to the issue.
