Biya Re-elected; Protests Spread to Major Cities

News summary

Cameroon's Constitutional Council confirmed 92-year-old President Paul Biya won an eighth seven-year term with about 53.66–53.7% of the vote, a victory that would extend his 43-year rule until 2032. Main challenger Issa Tchiroma Bakary rejected the result, claimed victory, called for nationwide protests and reported gunfire and alleged snipers near his home in Garoua. Widespread demonstrations in Douala, Yaoundé, Garoua and Maroua were met with tear gas, water cannon and, according to multiple accounts, live ammunition. The unrest has left at least four people dead, dozens injured and hundreds detained. Human Rights Watch and other observers urged authorities to rein in security forces, investigate alleged excessive force and release those wrongfully held. The election has intensified long-standing grievances over Biya’s longevity, frequent absences, economic stagnation, high youth unemployment, corruption and ongoing security crises, raising the risk of further unrest.
