Archaeologists Locate Site of King Harold's Palace in Bosham

Archaeologists from Newcastle University and the University of Exeter have identified the site of King Harold Godwinson's palace in Bosham, West Sussex, through a combination of new and past archaeological evidence. This discovery was aided by the re-analysis of previous excavations and the depiction of Bosham in the Bayeux Tapestry, which shows Harold's residence before setting sail for France. The site features a substantial moat and a large timber hall, with the presence of an internal en-suite toilet indicating its high-status. Researchers suggest that Harold may have been buried near his palace, as medieval sources indicate, although his final resting place remains uncertain. The findings are part of the 'Where Power Lies' project, which aims to explore early aristocratic centers across England. The discovery is significant as it sheds light on the Anglo-Saxon era, which has left minimal physical evidence due to the Norman Conquest.
