Ukraine Integrates Domestic Glide Bombs on MiG-29 Jets, Enhances Precision Strike Capability

Ukraine is advancing its domestic precision-strike capabilities by integrating an indigenous glide bomb kit (KAB) onto its MiG-29 fighter jets, marking a significant enhancement in the Air Force's tactical reach. Developed by the Medoid Design Bureau, this KAB converts conventional 500-kg bombs into smart glide bombs with a target accuracy confirmed after extensive navigation system work, currently achieving a range of up to 60 km with plans to extend to 80 km. The design deliberately mimics the Russian UMPK system for pragmatic mass production and incorporates a new payload developed with foreign partners and Ukrainian industry, though production and testing are currently limited by funding constraints. The MiG-29’s widespread availability and localized maintenance make it a practical carrier, potentially expanding the scale and frequency of precision strikes, especially as Ukraine’s Su-24 bombers are primarily tasked with launching Western-supplied cruise missiles. Additionally, Ukraine has showcased other advanced weaponry such as the Palianytsia long-range jet-powered drone with a 650 km range, and a modular electronic warfare system DF-M capable of jamming Russian drones at various distances, emphasizing a comprehensive effort to enhance both offensive and defensive military technologies amid ongoing conflict. These developments illustrate Ukraine's strategic adaptation of technology and resources to bolster its air capabilities against Russian forces.
