In response to a high-profile stalking case involving former Coronation Street actress Nicola Thorp, the UK government has introduced new measures to aid stalking victims. The initiative includes a 'Right to Know' statutory guidance, allowing police to disclose the identity of online stalkers promptly. This change was inspired by Thorp's experience of being harassed online by a man who used multiple social media accounts to send violent messages and identified himself as 'The Grim Reaper,' now serving a 30-month sentence. Additionally, the government aims to make Stalking Protection Orders more accessible, allowing courts to impose them even if an offender is acquitted, provided there is sufficient evidence of risk. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the importance of empowering victims and ensuring their safety through these legal adjustments.
