West Coast, Alaska Under Tsunami Watch After 8.7 Russia Earthquake
A powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Russia near the Kamchatka Peninsula has triggered a tsunami watch for the entire U.S. West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The National Tsunami Warning Center and NOAA have issued alerts stretching from the California-Mexico border to Alaska’s Chignik Bay, advising residents to stay alert and prepared for potential tsunami impacts, although no tsunami has been confirmed yet. The watch includes major cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland, with estimated tsunami arrival times provided for various coastal locations. Aftershocks of magnitudes 6.9 and 6.3 followed the initial quake, which occurred at a depth of 46 miles. More serious tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii and parts of Alaska, with some Aleutian residents urged to evacuate hazard zones immediately. Authorities emphasize that the situation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
