Meta Fined $4,176 for Consumer Protection Violations in South Korea

South Korea's Fair Trade Commission has fined Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for failing to comply with consumer protection laws in its e-commerce operations. The 6 million-won penalty was imposed after authorities found that Meta did not inform e-commerce sellers of their legal responsibilities, failed to establish a dispute resolution system for consumers, and lacked proper procedures to verify sellers’ identities. Additionally, Meta did not clearly specify the platform’s consumer protection duties in its terms of service. Meta has been ordered to implement corrective measures within 180 days, including guiding business-account influencers on compliance, establishing consumer redress procedures, and verifying seller identities to foster safer e-commerce transactions.
