NATO Responds to Russian Drone Threats with Expanded Air Defence Efforts
Following a recent incursion of nearly 20 Russian drones into Polish airspace, NATO and European allies are urgently seeking to enhance their air and missile defense capabilities. Germany has bolstered Ukraine's defenses by delivering a third Patriot missile system and training Ukrainian personnel to operate it. Experts, including former White House adviser Fiona Hill, emphasize the need for an integrated European air and ballistic missile defense system, noting that the US, under President Donald Trump, is unlikely to increase military support on NATO's eastern flank. Poland, deeply concerned by the drone attacks that caused civilian and military damage, has called for the creation of an 'anti-drone wall' on its border with Russia, advocating for more anti-aircraft assets like Patriot missiles and improved drone detection and interception technologies. NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe acknowledged gaps in current defenses and committed to improving the alliance's ability to secure all airspace. Collaborative projects such as the UK's Project Octopus, which aims to develop interceptor drones jointly with Ukraine, demonstrate ongoing efforts to counter escalating Russian drone threats.
