A new anti-theft software update for Kia and Hyundai vehicles has significantly reduced theft rates by over 50%, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI). This update, which prevents the car from starting unless unlocked with a key fob, was introduced in February 2023 after a sharp increase in thefts triggered by viral social media videos demonstrating how to steal the cars. Older models from 2011-2022, which lacked engine immobilizers, were particularly targeted. Despite the success of the software upgrade, overall theft rates for these vehicles remain high, and major insurance companies have declined coverage on certain models due to the elevated risk. The software has been installed in approximately 60% of eligible vehicles as of the latest reports. Additionally, Hyundai and Kia have been providing steering wheel locks for models that cannot receive the software upgrade.
