Series of U.S. and U.K. Rider Crashes
A string of bicycle and motorcycle crashes across the U.S. and U.K. this week left several riders dead or critically injured. On Long Island, a 15-year-old cyclist in Woodmere was struck from behind by a 75-year-old driver and remains in critical condition; the driver stayed at the scene and no arrests have been announced. In Suffolk County, a motorcyclist was killed after his 2007 Honda struck the rear of a Ford F-240 on Sunrise Highway; vehicles were impounded and lanes were closed for hours. Virginia State Police said a motorcyclist died after losing control on wet pavement and striking a guardrail on the I-495 ramp to Route 50, shutting the ramp during morning rush hour, and in Harrisburg an elderly bicyclist was critically injured after being struck by a truck on North Cameron Street and remains conscious while police investigate. In Pacific Beach, San Diego, a 57-year-old cyclist suffered multiple fractured ribs after a Mazda CX-5 broadsided and then rolled over him — investigators said DUI is not suspected — and near Beatrice, Nebraska, a 51-year-old trail rider who failed to stop at a crossing was struck by a pickup and transported to hospital; overseas, Cumbria Police said a man in his 60s was killed after colliding with a Ford Mustang on Kirkstone Pass, and in South Brunswick, New Jersey, a 51-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized in stable condition after a hit-and-run that remains under investigation. Authorities have impounded vehicles, closed roads where necessary and appealed for witnesses as investigations continue.
