New extremist group claims Athens bombing, dedicates attack to Palestinians

A new extremist group calling itself Revolutionary Class Struggle has claimed responsibility for a bomb explosion near the Hellenic Train offices in Athens, which occurred on April 11, causing limited damage but no injuries. The group also admitted to planting another bomb near the Labor Ministry earlier in February, and they warned media outlets about the blast 40 minutes in advance. In their statement, the group framed their actions as part of an armed struggle against the state, dedicating the bombings to the Palestinian people and paying tribute to Kyriakos Xymitiris, who died while assembling an explosive device last year. This attack coincides with ongoing public outrage over a severe railway disaster in 2023, which resulted in 57 deaths and highlighted significant safety flaws in Greece’s railway system. Revolutionary Class Struggle linked the railway accident to broader systemic issues, referring to it as one of many 'murders' of the working class by capitalists. Greece has a history of politically motivated violence, with recent years seeing the emergence of smaller extremist groups following the dismantling of larger organizations in previous decades.
