Germany Suspends Arms Exports to Israel Over Gaza Operations

Germany will suspend arms exports that could be used in Gaza in response to Israel’s plan to expand military control over the enclave, marking the first time since reunification that Berlin has withheld military support from Israel. Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the decision is a warning against Israel’s escalating military campaign, which has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza marked by widespread civilian casualties and destruction. This move reflects growing public and political pressure in Germany to ease the humanitarian disaster, despite Berlin's longstanding historical responsibility toward Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision, accusing Germany of rewarding Hamas and abandoning an ally during wartime. Germany has been a major arms supplier to Israel, accounting for around 30% of its imports, and had approved nearly €485 million in arms exports since the conflict began. The suspension aligns Germany with other nations condemning Israel’s actions, contrasting with the United States' continued unconditional support.
