Zoox Recalls Robotaxis After Las Vegas Crash
Amazon-owned Zoox voluntarily recalled 270 robotaxis after a crash in Las Vegas on April 8, 2025, involving an unoccupied robotaxi and a passenger car, which resulted in no injuries. The collision was caused by a software flaw that led the robotaxi to inaccurately predict the behavior of a car approaching its lane, despite emergency braking. Zoox paused all driverless operations, identified the issue, and rolled out a software update to all affected vehicles before resuming service. The recall and software fix were reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with Zoox emphasizing transparency and safety in their response. All vehicles on the road have received the update. The incident underscores ongoing challenges and competition in the autonomous vehicle industry, with Waymo and Tesla also advancing their robotaxi programs.
