Peoria International Airport Breaks Ground on New Tower

Peoria International Airport has officially commenced construction on a new air traffic control tower, a project that has been in the planning stages since 2009. The current tower, operational since 1959, is outdated, suffering from visibility issues, asbestos presence, and non-compliance with ADA standards. Approximately $30 million in federal funding has been secured through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but an additional $27 million is still needed to complete the project. The new tower will rise to 146 feet, significantly improving visibility for air traffic controllers. Elected officials from both parties have emphasized the safety and economic importance of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2-3 years. The construction will also address underlying geological challenges due to nearby coal mines.
