Sahara Dust Cloud Blankets Caribbean, Nears US Coastities
A massive cloud of Saharan dust, dubbed the 'Godzilla dust cloud,' has spread across the Caribbean, marking the largest dust event recorded in 2025 and the most significant in over 50 years. The dust plume stretches about 2,000 miles long and 750 miles wide, affecting areas from Jamaica to Barbados and from Turks and Caicos to Trinidad and Tobago, creating hazy skies and poor air quality. Health officials have warned individuals with asthma, allergies, or respiratory issues to stay indoors or wear masks due to the high dust concentration, measured at .55 aerosol optical depth, the highest this year. The Saharan Air Layer, a dry dusty air mass that typically moves from Africa across the Atlantic between April and October, is expected to continue westward, reaching parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast, including Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi, later this week. While the dust may help suppress hurricane formation by reducing moisture, it also causes visibility issues and breathing problems, prompting caution for outdoor activities and maritime operations in affected Caribbean regions. Weather patterns indicate that the dust concentrations may begin to thin in the coming days, although sea conditions remain moderate to rough, requiring vigilance from small craft operators and sea bathers.
