Communities Kick Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Communities around the world kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with pink-lit landmarks, runs, walks and local fairs promoting early detection, survivor support and community solidarity. In Mineola, Nassau County lit its government building pink and celebrated Hewlett House’s 25th anniversary — a nonprofit that has served more than 42,000 people — as officials urged residents to prioritize screenings amid Long Island’s breast cancer rates that are roughly 15–20% above the national average. In Coimbatore, Thomas Park was illuminated and hundreds joined a signature campaign organized by Kovai Medical Center, while India’s Pink Power Run mobilized thousands to combine fitness, education and empowerment. Local U.S. efforts included Philadelphia’s “Paint the Streets Pink” community day offering wigs, scarves and care packages, and Walker County’s schedule of prayer walks, educational programs and survivor services, all underscoring prevention, access to care and the role of community support.
