Navitas, Powerchip Plan 200mm GaN Production for AI, EV Markets

News summary

Navitas Semiconductor has entered a strategic partnership with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to begin production and development of 200mm gallium nitride (GaN)-on-silicon technology at Powerchip’s Fab 8B in Zhunan Science Park. This move aims to diversify Navitas' GaN wafer sources following TSMC’s planned cessation of GaN production by July 2027 and supports growing demand for GaN in 48V infrastructure, including AI data centers and electric vehicles. Powerchip will manufacture Navitas’ GaN portfolio with voltage ratings from 100V to 650V, with initial device qualification expected by Q4 2025 and production of 100V devices starting in the first half of 2026. The partnership leverages Powerchip’s improved 180nm CMOS process, which offers smaller geometries that enhance performance, power efficiency, integration, and cost. Navitas plans to transition its 650V devices from TSMC to Powerchip within 12 to 24 months, strengthening its supply chain and fostering innovation. This collaboration also complements Navitas' recent initiatives with NVIDIA and other companies targeting AI data center, EV, and solar markets.
