Boston Red Sox Reported Using AI Bot for Multiple Job Interviews Amid Organizational Criticism
The Boston Red Sox have faced scrutiny after reports emerged that they used an AI bot to conduct multiple rounds of job interviews for a baseball operations position, with one candidate reportedly undergoing five AI-only interview rounds without speaking to a human. MLB reporter Joon Lee described the situation as indicative of "organizational dysfunction" under the team's current leadership, contrasting it unfavorably with the more personal approach of teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox organization denied these claims, clarifying that they have used the HireVue tool since 2012 as an initial screening method for all roles, involving recorded video responses to facilitate in-person interviews, and emphasized that AI is not a replacement for human interaction in hiring. Former Red Sox executive Zack Scott supported the organization's explanation, noting that AI-driven video interviews have been used primarily for entry-level positions and that multiple AI-only interview rounds for higher positions seem unlikely. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow confirmed AI's role as an early filter but stressed that human conversations occur during the hiring process. Despite the controversy, the Red Sox continue to perform well on the field, though the allegations have been a distraction for the team and its leadership.
