Sam the Trinity Fox, beloved campus legend, has died

Sam, the beloved Trinity College fox who became a viral sensation during the COVID-19 lockdowns, has passed away after struggling with a leg injury. Known for his nightly patrols of the empty campus and interactions with students, Sam was taken in by Kildare Wildlife Rescue in January, but despite receiving care, it was determined that the most compassionate choice was to put him down. He had garnered a following for his antics and was even celebrated in poetry by Derek Mahon. Sam was a father to five cubs, which added to the lore surrounding him, although there was some initial confusion about his gender. The fox's final days were spent in an animal sanctuary, where he received comfort before the difficult decision was made.
