Myanmar Maid Jailed One Year for Abusing 90-Year-Old Dementia Patient in Singapore

Kyal Kyal Tun, a 39-year-old Myanmar national domestic helper in Singapore, was sentenced to one year in jail for abusing a frail 90-year-old woman with dementia under her care, including biting, choking, and slamming her against a sofa. The victim, who wore adult diapers and had mobility difficulties along with her 91-year-old husband who also has dementia, was left with injuries such as broken ribs and bruises, although a doctor could not conclusively link the injuries to the abuse. The abuse was captured on CCTV, showing Kyal Kyal Tun forcefully covering the woman's mouth, shaking her, and hitting her repeatedly despite the victim's cries for help. The maid had been employed by the elderly couple's grandson since late 2024 and admitted to assault charges, citing stress as a factor in her actions. The grandson discovered the abuse after reviewing CCTV footage following a fall his grandfather suffered and subsequently reported the incidents to the police. Kyal Kyal Tun’s sentence took into account multiple assault and criminal force charges related to the vulnerable elderly victim.
