Defamation Case Against Deadspin Moves Forward
A Delaware judge has allowed a defamation lawsuit against Deadspin to proceed, filed by the Armenta family after the sports outlet published a controversial article regarding their son, Holden. The article accused the nine-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan of wearing blackface and a Native American headdress in a disrespectful manner during a game in November 2023. Deadspin's writer, Carron J. Phillips, criticized the child's appearance, suggesting it symbolized hatred towards Black and Native American communities. The family argued that the article presented 'provable false assertions,' only showing the black-painted side of Holden's face while omitting the red-painted side, and accused Deadspin of malicious intent. Superior Court Judge Sean Lugg concluded that the statements in the article crossed the line from opinion into defamatory territory and refused to dismiss the case. Deadspin's parent company at the time, G/O Media, has since sold the outlet, but the legal battle continues.
