British scientists have made significant progress toward developing a vaccine for drug-resistant gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is increasingly becoming untreatable due to antibiotic resistance. The study, conducted by the Universities of Oxford and Manchester with a group of sex workers in Kenya, focused on the immune response to a related vaccine against Neisseria meningitidis. Analysis of blood samples revealed that certain antigens generated by the Nm vaccine specifically target structures on gonorrhea cells. Although the Nm vaccine currently shows limited effectiveness against gonorrhea, researchers believe that further refinement could lead to a more effective vaccine. Project leaders emphasize the potential for this approach to aid in vaccine development for other drug-resistant infections. This research comes amidst rising gonorrhea rates, with over 85,000 reported cases in England, raising public health concerns.
