Akron Teens Found in Suspected Murder-Suicide

Akron police are investigating a suspected murder‑suicide after two teenage girls — 18‑year‑old Kayla Johnson and 17‑year‑old Janaya Miller — were found with gunshot wounds early Oct. 5 near South Hawkins Avenue and Peckham Street. Officers responded to reports of shots fired about 12:15–12:20 a.m., and first responders pronounced both dead at the scene. The Summit County Medical Examiner reported Johnson died of a gunshot to the head while Miller’s wound was self‑inflicted; autopsies and toxicology tests are pending. Akron Public Schools said Miller was a North High student and Johnson a recent district graduate and offered condolences. Investigators with Akron police and the medical examiner continue to probe the circumstances, and officials reminded the public that crisis resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988) are available.
