Michigan Man Arrested for Allegedly Selling Counterfeit Airbags Affecting 81,000 Vehicles
Dinas Kamaitis, a 31-year-old man from New Baltimore, Michigan, has been arrested for allegedly selling counterfeit airbags and other automotive safety systems online, posing significant risks to vehicle owners. The Michigan Attorney General's Auto Fraud Task Force reports that around 81,000 vehicles may have been equipped with these counterfeit parts, with over 80% of such airbags failing to deploy properly in accidents. Kamaitis faces multiple felony charges, including using a computer to commit a crime and selling counterfeit supplemental restraint systems, which could lead to nearly 50 years in prison if convicted. Authorities have seized more than $600,000 from his bank accounts in connection with the case. Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized the seriousness of counterfeit parts as a public safety hazard and the commitment of her office to protect consumers. Kamaitis is scheduled to appear in court again on April 10, 2025.
