Malaysia Courts Commute Death Sentences
The Federal Court of Malaysia has commuted several death sentences to 40 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane, reflecting changes in capital punishment laws. M. Murthy, convicted of murdering his young son in 2007, had his death penalty replaced due to considerations of his severe mental health issues, including schizophrenia. Similarly, former police chief Azilah Hadri's sentence was reduced for his role in the 2006 murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu, with support from the victim's father influencing the court's decision. Additionally, two former followers of the 'Tuhan Harun' cult also had their death sentences commuted. All decisions were rendered by a three-judge panel led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. These rulings illustrate a significant shift in Malaysia's approach to capital punishment and the consideration of mental health in sentencing.
