Myanmar Junta Raids Scam Hub, Seizes 30 Starlink Receivers, Frees 2200 Workers Near Thai Border
Myanmar's military raided a major internet scam center near the Thai border, seizing over 30 Starlink satellite internet terminals amid a crackdown on illicit operations exploiting advanced technology. The raid on the "KK Park" compound uncovered approximately 2,200 workers and about 200 buildings, with many workers reportedly trafficked and forced into scam activities such as romance and investment fraud. Despite a multinational crackdown beginning in February that freed around 7,000 workers, new scam operations rapidly expanded, with satellite imagery showing new constructions and widespread Starlink dish installations, despite Starlink not being licensed in Myanmar. Data from the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre showed Starlink as the most-used internet provider in Myanmar from July to October 2025, raising concerns about the proliferation of the technology in illicit networks. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated Southeast Asian scam operations defrauded victims of up to $37 billion in 2023. The U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee has initiated an investigation into Starlink's involvement with these scam centers, highlighting international scrutiny of the situation.
