Trinamool Congress MP Haji Nurul Islam Dies at 61

Haji Nurul Islam, a prominent Trinamool Congress MP from Basirhat, West Bengal, passed away on September 25 at the age of 61 after a prolonged battle with liver cancer. He died at home following a sudden deterioration in his health, despite having received treatment in both Delhi and Kolkata. Islam was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 and had recently won back his Basirhat seat in the 2024 elections by a significant margin. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other party leaders expressed their condolences, highlighting his dedication to social work and the upliftment of the poor in the Sundarbans region. Known for his organizational skills, Islam had also served as an MLA from Haroa and was a respected figure within the TMC since its inception in 1998. His passing has left a void in local politics and among his constituents, who will miss his leadership.
