Sculpture on Antiques Roadshow Revealed as Enwonwu Art

An Antiques Roadshow episode from Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey featured a remarkable valuation surprise for a guest whose £50 car boot sale sculpture was identified as a work by Ben Enwonwu, a celebrated Nigerian artist. The sculpture, used as a doorstop, was valued at between £10,000 and £15,000. Expert John Foster highlighted Enwonwu's pioneering role in blending Nigerian and Western art, noting his rise to fame in the 1940s through the Zwemmer Gallery, which catapulted him to international exhibitions in New York, London, and Milan. The guest expressed shock and delight at the unexpected worth of the piece, initially speculating it might have been worth only £100. This revelation was among the highlights of the show, which also featured other valuable finds, including a possible first edition of Winnie the Pooh and a rare ballerina brooch.
