Ukraine Plans Coal Supply to Transnistria Amid Energy Crisis

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine is prepared to supply coal to the Cuciurgan power station in the breakaway region of Transnistria, which is currently facing an energy crisis following the expiration of a gas transit agreement with Russia. During a press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine could provide coal at low or no cost to help restore electricity and heating to the region, which previously relied on gas from Russia. Sandu supported the initiative, urging the authorities in Transnistria to accept the aid promptly. The situation has escalated tensions, with Transnistria's leader accusing Moldova of blocking gas supplies for political reasons and expressing skepticism about the suitability of the coal offered by Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kyiv has refused to renew the gas transit agreement, citing concerns over Russia's influence in the region. The crisis has led to demonstrations in Transnistria, demanding the resumption of Russian gas supplies.
