The UN reports that polio vaccination coverage in Gaza has reached 90%, with around 560,000 children under ten vaccinated during the first phase of the emergency campaign, which ran from September 1 to 12, 2024. This initiative was prompted by the first confirmed polio case in Gaza in 25 years, following the detection of the type 2 virus. Despite challenges such as ongoing conflict and unsanitary conditions, health workers managed to conduct the campaign effectively, aided by humanitarian pauses. The next step involves vaccinating hundreds of thousands of children with a second dose by the end of September. However, the UN warned of threats from other diseases due to poor sanitation and the urgent need for clean water and hygiene supplies. The situation remains dire, with over 41,000 Palestinians reported killed due to ongoing violence in Gaza since the escalation began in October 2023.
