Michael Gennaco Appointed Special Prosecutor in L.A.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has appointed Michael Gennaco as a special prosecutor to investigate police misconduct cases, including officer-involved shootings. Gennaco, a former federal prosecutor and expert in civil rights, replaces Lawrence Middleton, who had previously been criticized for his lack of prosecutions during his tenure. Hochman stated that Gennaco's role will involve reexamining evidence and pursuing charges against law enforcement officers when appropriate, aiming to enhance transparency and public trust in the justice system. The appointment comes as part of Hochman's broader effort to reevaluate past decisions related to police misconduct and ensure accountability. Gennaco's extensive experience includes overseeing investigations into excessive force and having previously led the Office of Independent Review for Los Angeles County. The contract for Gennaco's position became effective January 14, as approved by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors.
