The Odisha government has placed Balasore district on high alert as the Subarnarekha River has flooded over 324 villages due to heavy rainfall, prompting the evacuation of over 400 residents from low-lying areas in Bhograi, Jaleswar, Basta, Baliapal, and Sadar blocks. The Central Water Commission reported that the river's water level reached 10.37 meters, above the danger mark of 10.36 meters, while the Budhabalang and Jalaka rivers have begun to recede. Affected areas are now receiving supplies of cooked food and shelter as authorities anticipate further flooding. The situation is critical, with reports of significant agricultural land submerged and fears of crop loss. Additionally, the Jalaka River is also above its danger mark, exacerbating the flooding in adjacent regions. Rainfall has ceased in the upper catchment areas, providing some relief to local residents and officials.
