Jade Shanicia Lanique Robertson, a Durham County detention officer, was arrested and fired for allegedly engaging in sexual activity with an inmate on August 1, 2023. Robertson, who had worked for the sheriff's office since October 2019 and was promoted to sergeant in September 2022, was charged with violating a North Carolina law that prohibits sexual activity by a person having custody of a victim in a governmental institution. She was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond and is set to appear in court on October 17. Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead emphasized that Robertson's behavior does not reflect the values or training of the sheriff's office. This incident is considered rare but severe, according to North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association Executive Vice President Eddie Caldwell.
