China Constructs Solar Great Wall in Desert
China is constructing a vast 'Solar Great Wall' in the Kubuqi Desert, aiming to stretch 400 kilometers and generate up to 100 gigawatts of power by 2030, enough to supply energy for Beijing and its surrounding areas. Currently, approximately 5.4 gigawatts have been installed, and the project is part of China's broader strategy to lead in renewable energy, with the country already accounting for 51% of global solar capacity as of June 2024. The solar farm's strategic location benefits from abundant sunshine and flat terrain, while also offering environmental advantages such as combating desertification and promoting vegetation growth beneath the panels. Major installations like the Junma Solar Power Station, completed in 2019, highlight the project's scale and potential, as it already generates enough electricity for 300,000 to 400,000 people annually. With an expected annual output of 180 billion kilowatt-hours by 2030, the project is projected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the region. This initiative reflects China's commitment to addressing climate change while enhancing its energy infrastructure.
