PBS Premieres 'Omara: Cuba's Legendary Diva' Documentary
Aiesha Edwards, known as Aicandy, has transformed from facing local criticism to becoming an internationally acclaimed dancer performing alongside major soca and dancehall artists across Europe, America, and the Caribbean. Edwards credits her early training with Claudette Peters and key collaborations, including with Kittian Soca artist Pumpa and Jamaican star Vybz Kartel, for her breakthrough and continued success. Meanwhile, a new PBS documentary, "Omara: Cuba’s Legendary Diva," directed by Hugo Perez, explores the life and career of Omara Portuondo beyond her Buena Vista Social Club fame, highlighting her resilience against ageism and her involvement in Cuban political history. The film captures Portuondo's extensive career from her early days at Havana’s Tropicana Club, through her political activism and solo successes, to her recent global tours, portraying her as a vibrant and enduring artist. Both Edwards and Portuondo exemplify perseverance and the power of cultural expression amid challenges, with Edwards rising from local skepticism and Portuondo confronting industry ageism while maintaining her artistic vitality.
